A new year usually means setting a goal to remodel that extra bedroom, cut out caffeine, or finally hit the gym for 30 minutes a day. This year you have an even greater goal in mind, the improvement of your privacy program. Here are some great ways to start you on your way to achieving just that.
Expand your knowledge
One of the best way to improve your privacy program is to learn from other privacy professionals. Look for local events such as knowledge nets or other networking events, find a webinar on certain privacy topics, or obtain a certification in a field of privacy if you haven’t already. All of these options will help you learn how to further improve your privacy program and implement policies you are working on. Furthermore, you will meet other privacy professionals, allowing you to utilize their knowledge as well when you need help.
Assess your current situation
The best way to get ready for a new year, and all the new laws and regulations that are coming as well, is to understand where you are now. A privacy assessment allows you to know what the current policies are and how they are being followed or enforced. You will also find gaps and concerns that require focus. Once you understand where you are, it is much easier to decide where you are going and how to get there.
Don’t go it alone
The most important lesson I have learned from being a privacy professional is that you cannot be an island. Privacy offices require buy-in from all parts of a business, executives included. Make sure to work with others in your business, understanding how privacy policies impact them and work to ensure that their practices grow with your policies. Privacy is a part of doing business and should not be treated as an obstacle. If you are developing a new policy, such as a bring your own device policy, see how that would affect the sales office. Consult with the VP or other sales managers to know what devices are being used and how. When you go back to writing the policy, make sure it covers the areas you know affects your company.
